FAQ
Here are the most common questions I get through the website. I will continue to add to them as they come in.
“I usually vote Republican. How do I know you’re not just saying what it takes to get elected and then will govern very differently than you’ve campaigned?”
I would ask you to consider that everything in my background and actions to date should put you at ease:
- As the child of immigrants, I grew up in an extremely fiscally conservative household. This has governed my finances as well, which has allowed me to live off my savings for one year as I quit my job to run for Congress. I am a big-believer in savings vs borrowing and wish our government followed this same principle.
- I have run one of the most fiscally conservative/responsible campaigns in the country. I won my primary despite a 4:1 financial disadvantage, by making the most of every penny I had. I believe you can tell the truly fiscally conservative/responsible individuals by not just their rhetoric, but also their background and their campaigns. I’ve rolled up my sleeves to make every dollar go farther and will do the same thing in DC.
- Having worked extensively in the private-sector, I believe strongly in accountability — something that our present government badly lacks. I will bring this same private-sector mindset of transparency and cost-cutting to the areas of government which are not delivering. We should treat taxpayer dollars as we do our own.
“What is your stand on the right to bear arms?”
I believe that the 2nd amendment is as important as the 1st amendment. To truly impact violent crime rates we must improve our economic conditions. Addressing our underlying societal and economic inequalities are our best hope to ensure that citizens don’t lose hope and turn to violent crime. I will fully protect the 2nd amendment.
“Why does your stand on the issues sound different than other Democrats?”
To start with, I wrote and researched every sentence of my policy platforms which is one reason it looks different than you what you typically see. I didn’t go about running for this office, or forming my positions by working backwards from positions I was supposed to have. Instead, I focused on the biggest challenges I see us facing as a nation and the most practical way we could solve them. My goal is to focus on an agenda and solutions that both major parties can agree on.
“Every politician sounds good during the election. How can I trust you to actually do these things if you get elected?”
First, I am already “doing it” in the way I am running my campaign: I haven’t taken a single penny of special interest money. No corporate, union, or shadowy organization money. Every penny comes from an individual. That matters because if I was just trying to win office at any cost as my most important goal, I would have taken the money that’s been offered. I’ve said “no”, because I believe one of the reasons things are so bad in DC is because of the “legalized bribery” that’s gone on.
Second, I’ve pledged that, in my first term, if I don’t introduce legislation to — 1) cut the debt 2) help bring back manufacturing jobs by fighting for fair-trade and globally competitive tax/regulatory policies and 3) reforming the campaign finance system — I won’t run for reelection. It’s that simple. I don’t want to be a career politician, I want to fix a Washington that’s ruining our country.
“What is your stand on abortion?”
I believe every abortion is a potential tragedy and something that we must seek to avoid to the best of our ability. Responsible planning, education, and intelligent public programs are critical. Ultimately this is a decision for a woman, her family and her doctor. I support ensuring that this important, life-altering decision is given the consideration it requires. This is why I support common sense measures such as parental notification, 24 hour waiting period, etc.
